What kind of leather do you use?
Only full grain Buffalo hide, 5 or 6 ounce, hand-cut by rotary blade and hand-punched. It’s thicker and more resilient than cowhide. It makes a great notebook. We source two great colours, Deep Brown and Rugged.
Deep Brown runs dark and clean. It’s more resilient to wear and tear, and tends to age slowly. It’s like a fine wine. Or a really interesting scar from that one time, years and years ago, when you fought off that grizzly with your fists.
Rugged runs lighter, a bit more abrasive, and, well, rugged. It shows wear and tear quick, which gives it character and personality beyond its’ age. It’s the kind of style you can throw in your bag and have come out looking great.
What are the specs for your paper?
Standard A5 sheets, 5.8”x8.3”. Environment 100% reconstructed paper. 80# thickness. Two-hole punched. Designed for single-side use. Light surface toothing, for improved ink performance. Available in blank or lined or dotgrid.
What do you mean by “supports emerging artists?”
Exactly that. It’s hard to find a place when you are just starting out. Northbound & Notable is a magazine online and in print, distributed to our patrons. It’s a great way to celebrate the creativity around us. Each item sold through our store helps fund the n&n payout pool, and each time we publish a magazine, we pay out our contributors. How can I clean my notebook and make it look awesome?
Wash leather with a small amount of water. Avoid using harsh chemicals. Natural blemishes and scarring will occur; it is expected. Do NOT clean with alcohol or detergent. That makes me cry just thinking about it.
Who makes these and what is the process like?
Northbound Notebooks is run by a guy who makes them by hand. One at a time. And then he hired some friends to do it the same way. Notebooks ship within a week, but inventory delays can cause longer waits. We'll contact you with details every step of the way.
How do you ship?
We ship via Canada post world-wide. For international customers outside of the USA and Canada, expect 4-6 weeks for standard shipping. Tracking is not always available depending on shipping method. Contact us for more shipping options. We want to get stuff to you inexpensively and safely.
To be transparent: shipping sucks in Canada. We’re working on some alternatives. Even though we are neighbours, we are way behind the US when it comes to affordable small business shipping. For now, we’ve decided to cover this cost, until we figure out a solution long term.
What about customs and fees?
We ship internationally and in compliance with international law. That means, sometimes, you might have to pay some customs stuff. We have managed to avoid it thus far, but on orders more than several hundred dollars, expect the unexpected.
What if I don’t like it and want to return it?
If you are unhappy with your notebook, simply send it back within 30 days in good condition. We'll refund your money and go our separate ways. But we'll always think of you, on those cold, lonely nights.
